You found an artist you love! Now what?

Ok, so you found an artist, you love their work and you want it on your body. Now what? How should you go about messaging your artist? What is proper etiquette and what are some faux pas? And no, “Yo, I want a tat” won’t do. First, introduce yourself. Then get straight to the point. Some artists get a ton of emails and when we have a lot to riffle through, keeping it simple and straight to the point until the follow up email is greatly appreciated! Then, explain the tattoo you want in as much detail as possible and be sure to include the following:

  • What it is you want

  • The style you are looking for (e.g. traditional, neotraditional, realism, geometric etc. Be sure to do your research as to what styles there is and what style your artist likes to do best)

  • Colour or Black and Grey

  • Size (approximate in inches)

  • Placement (where on your body)

  • Send any photos you have of reference if this makes it easier to express what your vision is

  • Discuss pre-care and aftercare

  • When you are hoping to book for

Be sure to also discuss with your artist cost, deposit amount, approximate tattoo time expected to accomplish, if there is need for a consult and any other details you may want to go over prior to making an appointment. Remember, every artist has their own way of doing things so be sure to discuss and respect their process. Please give your artist time to respond to your request as artists are very busy working on current client projects and may need a couple days to a week to respond. Being respectful and professional with your tattoo artist will ensure a smooth tattoo process. Stay healthy San Diego!
